Chapter Ten

Sandra plopped down onto her perfectly made bed, thinking of the night that she didn’t spend in it. The night she had spent with a man other than her ex-husband, Carlos. In the past, she’d spent most evenings alone. When Deuce came along, he crowded her, rolling into her body as he slept as a newborn. But a man...

Manuel Domingo. That was something different. Sure, they had been intimate. However, never had she spent a night lying wrapped in his arms for hours. And breakfast in bed to boot. That much was overwhelming in itself.

When she thought it couldn’t get any more outrageous, Manuel dropped the bomb on her. Divorce. He had gotten divorced? Yes, it was a question. One that she never thought to ask. She’d assumed that he had been legally divorced from his wife even when they had conceived Deuce. Yet it was apparent that was not the case.

Sandra quickly shook the concern from her mind and decided to table her internal discussion until later. It was still early morning, and it looked to be a Texas scorcher, so she sauntered over to her dresser and began to mess around in her drawer filled with swimsuits. Many with the tags still on them. She had a thing for wanting to prance around in bright colors and full-exposure swimsuits when they visited the lake, but that just wasn’t the appropriate thing for a mother to wear.

No parents echoed in her thoughts. Manuel said that they were just two adults having fun for the day. Just a day. Sandra shrugged and muttered, “What the hay,” and picked out a two-piece she’d never worn, then spread the ensemble on the bed while she made her way to the ensuite bathroom for a quick shower.

Once Sandra toweled off, she tied back her hair into a loose ponytail and slipped on the orange suit, then a sheer black cover-up over the top and her favorite black sandals. She put a towel and sunblock in a canvas bag. Before she left the room, she stood in front of the mirror and inventoried her look. Was it too revealing? Too suggestive? She didn’t want to put anything out there. Flirtation. Desire. None of it.

Sandra shook her head with frustration. “Dammit! I’ve already slept with the man. What is my problem?”

The path she had taken in life had left her open only to be a wife and a caretaker. There was no room to have freedom. She didn’t have the time or openness to dote on who she was while standing in front of that mirror, looking at herself. She felt nothing close to free.

Prudishness. That was it. She was a prude. Sandra was half naked, going out for a swim with a man whom she’d had sex with, but she was utterly terrified to have him touch her in the passionate, loving sense. To view her body as a thing of beauty.

Sandra jumped when she heard a light knock at the door.

“Are you ready yet?”

Instead of answering, she swallowed a bit of air and calmed her racing pulse.
